Beginings of a dog portrait

I've decided to use pastel pencils on sandpaper for my portrait of Shayli. I've been wanting to try out a new paper I purchased last winter called UArt pastel sandpaper, 800 grit. So far so good but I'm finding myself forever sharpening my pencils to keep a fine point!

  1. Colette that is just lovely and although I have never tried pastel pencils or sandpaper it does look like a really interesting effect. I can hardly wait for the future posts...

  3. I can't wait to see this done! What type of pastel pencils do you use?

  4. Oh Colette...you'll love this paper. I use prismas on this 800 paper and yes, there is a lot of sharpening but I find it more forgiving than Stonehenge because I can apply more layers. Have fun!

  5. Krista, I appreciate your comments!I'm using Pitt pastel as well as carbothello and also a bit of verithin Prisma's.

Diana, once I finish this piece, I actually want to try my prismas on the UArt. I love it so far and it seems to be able to take many layers.

  6. Oh this is going to be lovely. I like the fur you have already.

I have some sanded paper. I don't seem to get on with it too well although I have only used Colorpencils on it and it just eats the pencils. Maybe I could try out some pastel pencils.

  7. Thanks Doreen! If you think colored pencils grind down on sandpaper, pastels are even worse being so much softer. I keep sharpening and try to avoid too much pressure to keep the point sharp longer.

  8. Colette which do you find better the pitts or the carbothellos?

  9. Hum, that's tough...I use both primarily for the range of color I get out of both sets so I have no preference really except for finding the color I need.
