More Bird Feathers

Painting realistic bird feathers can be challenging at best and working with pastels is no exception.  I, for one, have come to realize that I have grown to dislike painting feathers, especially more so after working this piece to death!   I consider this another exercise; one that has forced me to practice something I dislike and truly frustrates me. I hope this bird painting does not find it's way in my "behind the door" pile...

  1. I sense your frustration, but this is much too good to go "behind the door"!!
Those fine little feathers that are like hair between the eye and the beak are often ignored, I think because of the difficulty factor, but yours are absolutely amazing!

  4. Since I've never tried pastels, I have no way of knowing about it's particular challenges. I know that when I paint feathers in acrylics, I concentrate on the underlying form. Feather details are added almost as an afterthought, and usually only take minutes to replicate once the surface contours are right. Your eagle looks really good to me. As does all your work.

  5. Much appreciated John! I think I need to tackle bird feathers using a different medium or change my approach with pastels.
