Dog Portrait of Golden Retriever and Labrador mix

I love the look and feel of pastel on suede as it gives the portrait a soft and delicate appearance...so much so that the viewer is tempted to pet or stroke the dogs.

I decided to add a few coats of spray fixative to this larger painting to ensure the pastel stays where it is supposed to. This prevents unwanted loose dust to dirty the glass and mat once the portrait is framed.

  3. I don't think we can get suedeboard here in the UK.

I've worked on velour before. I find it a bit too soft for my liking and I can't get the definition I like.

I enjoy Clairefontaine Pastelmat though so perhaps that might be a bit closer to suede?

Anyway, this turned out beautifully (as always) and I enjoyed watching progress

  4. Thank you Sue; the Pastelmat is nothing like the suede. The suede I use is made by Bainbridge or Crescent and is used primarily by framers for mating framed art. I have yet to find anything else that even comes close to the texture except maybe Hahnemuhle velour. Hope this helps!

  5. Fantastic final! I'm wanting to try the suede myself but haven't yet. Never enough time or money for all the different things I still have to try with my art but maybe one of these days :)

  6. Thank you Peggy. The suede can be hard to find and when you do, you will gasp at the price. It is very expensive!!
