Art in Camera - Celebrating Ontario Artists | Legislative Assembly of Ontario

Last spring, I was invited by Artists on Elgin to submit artwork for consideration to be part of a six month long exhibit at the Legislative Assembly of Ontario "In Camera" dinning room.  My piece "Contemplation" was accepted along with nine other works from local northern artists. As the exhibit was rolling to an end in December 2018, I was contacted by a private client who expressed interest in purchasing the feline drawing.

What a pleasant surprise when I learned today that the sale was finalized and my artwork has found its forever home!

"Contemplation" has won several awards, namely,  Best of Show and People's Choice at Cavalcade of Colours Show, 1st place Drawing at La Cloche Juried Art Show and The People's Choice Award at the SAC Exhibit. It was also part of my "Drawn to Nature" 2017 solo exhibit at Artists on Elgin. You can view a video of the exhibit on my youtube channel here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EyUPaIl6l-0

Diving Polar Bear Drawing Wildlife Artwork

I have quite a bit of catching up to do in terms of art sharing. This is bound to happen when you are the sole proprietor of a business so I get to wear many hats and some things must get pushed to the back burner due to lack of time.

The following diving polar bear portrait was featured during my last solo exhibition "Drawn to Nature" and was quite popular with visitors. He was one of the last piece to be completed during my three month creative blitz and probably my most favorite to work on.

Due to the global warming phenomenon, the disappearing ice floes make it harder for this white bear to successfully hunt and find prey during the diminished hunting season.  Polar bears must stock up and replenish their body stores by consuming adequate amounts of seal blubber; this to sustain them through the rest of the year when they have nothing else to feed on. Sadly, some are unable to do this and end up having to scavenge on garbage, leaving many starving to death. "Pushing The Limits" is meant to draw attention to the shrinking world polar bears are currently facing and raise awareness about the importance and urgency of promoting environmental stewardship.

Weimaraner portrait drawing using graphite, charcoal and colored pencils

I love creating all sorts of portrait poses for my clients!  The following dog drawing was composed using two of the client's photos which features a puppy shot as the main pose and a smaller vignette of the same dog as an adult, portraying one of Addie's favorite pastime.

For this drawing, I used mainly graphite pencils along with a touch of colored pencils on the main pose. I felt we really had to capture the Weimaraner's impressive pale blue eyes and the unusual brown nose and tones in her shinny fur. In addition, the mauve and green colours of the collar seems to liven up the whole composition.

I really like how the shimmering silver grey tones of  Addy's coat turned out...coupled with that adorably sweet expression, it definitely has become one of my favorite commissions to have had the opportunity to draw!!

So, if you happen to know anyone who might be interested in having a portrait of their furry, scaly or feathery companion, I'd be forever grateful if you could share my website www.colettetheriault.com with them! ♥

Quarter (Barrel) Horse Pencil Drawing Portrait Commission

Horses have been a favorite animal of mine since early childhood so it comes as no surprise that I embrace every opportunity I have to paint or draw them!

I was asked to draw this beautiful horse's portrait as a memorial tribute for a friend. I used mainly 8B and F pencils along with my tortillions, chamois and Q-tips for delicate blending.

The original photo included a busy background and the horse was wearing a halter but it was decided to leave those out of the drawing to focus on the subject.

Silverpoint Oak Leaf Drawing (.999 pure fine silver)

Something new I've been experimenting with and am very excited to announce that I will be taking commissions using Silverpoint beginning in the next few months.

The extremely fine detail that can be achieved using Silverpoint is somewhat like scratchboard... I  have to use a magnifying glass while working!  You can really see the silvery glistening shine when looking at the drawing at different angles. BUT, you truly must see this in person to appreciate the qualities of the silver on paper.

New Limited Edition Print of Snow Leopard with Remarque

What is so unique about these Artist's Proof limited edition prints is that each of them have a different hand-drawn "remarque" or little drawing. And since there are only FIVE of these individualized prints, it makes them much more desirable to own.

So, let me introduce you to AP 2/5 of  my snow leopard drawing "Peaceful Repose"!

I will be selling this print framed and will post a photo when it is all dressed up. Contact me if you are interested in owning a piece of my h-art :)

Drawing of black capped chickadee on branch

Today I completed a second bird drawing in the chickadee series. I love how quickly these are coming along compared to the longer and larger pieces which take forever to finish.

Black Capped Chickadee sketch/drawing in pencil

The first in a series of original chickadee drawings, this artwork was done using charcoal and graphite pencils. I intend to create about 10 different variations of these bird drawings and then am considering the possibility of offering unique "collage" prints.

Cat drawing in need of a title

I am still contemplating whether to call this feline drawing finished and might even change the crop ratio on the image ever so slightly (the cat is too low)....I think I will darken parts of the blurred out area behind the cat as the foreground looks too dark compared to the rest of the boards (might even just lighten the foreground too).

The cat was actually laying down on a wooden dock which explains her fore paw clutching in between the boards. She was seemingly content as she watched me, sprawled out on my belly, taking her photo. I really loved her expression, how relaxed she was and the perspective... which is the main reason for drawing this pose.

The home stretch...

With the foreground and a bit of the back paw left to do, I call this the home stretch!

Progression of a cat portrait in pencil

Before I close the lights in the studio and call it a day, I decided to scan and show the (little) bit of progress I accomplished today. Tomorrow is another day and I hope to sit down long enough to finish most of her face.

New Animal Portrait in Graphite...bye bye pastels, for now anyways...

I love working with pastels but it is the tremendous surface area  required that I dislike (that and having to clean the dust). I am talking about the surface area required to lay out my numerous pastel chalks, sticks and pencils so that finding the exact color I need can be done at a glance. This also means that my pastels are left laying around collecting dust and taking up precious room. But even worse is the potential for breakage should one roll off the top of a table or chair, or whatever else surface I have them sprawled over.

Logically, I knew one day I would require a storage unit for them; you know, one that has numerous, wide but shallow drawers that allow for easy storage, viewing and sorting of my precious pigments! These taborets as they are sometimes called, can be expensive but I am fortunate to have several family members involved in the woodworking profession. Both my husband and my father are avid woodworkers; my father being retired, was the prime candidate for my next project, and he wholeheartedly agreed!  Once the unit is finished and set up in my studio, I will be posting a follow up with lots of photos, so stay tuned!

Now that my pastels are stored away in their respective containers on the shelf and I have cleaned my studio and work easel of the colored dust, it was safe to take out my virgin white paper and graphite pencils to begin my next project. It may not look like much at the moment, but I take it that some of you will readily guess the silhouette of the featured animal.

Pet Portrait Step 4: the wrinkles and an ear

While it may not seem like the portrait has advanced significantly since my last post, I did put quite a bit of time on what I have done so far. My method consists of indenting fine hairs with my pencil, burnishing, erasing and then applying additional layers of graphite on top of the previous.
I continue (not always in that particular order) until the desired tonal value and level of detail is achieved. This may also require me to go back to previously finished areas to adjust the overall tone of the portrait.

I do find the process more time consuming on a white dog due to the fact that the images I work with are almost always of low contrast and the subtleties in the lighter tones or values are more difficult to adjust.

Step 2 Bird drawing

In this sitting I have completed the bird's head and started adding the base color for the rest of the body. I find it interesting how I am able to layer the colored pencils rather easily on the sandpaper.
