When I first saw the reference image I was using for Ollie's portrait I thought oh, how much FUN it was going to be to draw this pose! One can't help but smile looking at Ollie's charming face as she stares right back at you.
This portrait was commissioned to remember all the joy that Ollie brought to the lives of her human family.

Portrait of Belgian Malinois Painting in Pastel

As promised, here is the finished and client approved version of the Belgian Malinois dog portrait using pastels.

After sketching the outline and major features of the dog, I worked the top half of the background first.  Then I started with the ears and worked my way down the dog's face. The last part was adding the darker green on the lower half of the background.

Wire Haired Jack Russell Terrier Painting in Pastel

This dog portrait is pending client approval but while I wait, I just had to post the finished portrait. I have never seen a Jack Russell with erect ears and so I did not recognize the breed on the client photographs right away . The scruffy appearance of her wiry fur also added to the challenge.

Cassidy is portrayed her in her older years where her facial markings have pretty much faded to the point where they are no longer visible. I am always amazed at how different a dog's coat and markings can appear as they move up in age.

I might regret....

In haste of starting this portrait, I blissful painted the dog without putting any much thought to the background! Something I am bound to regret sooner or later. I don't dislike the plain background however...but I feel that her lively face deserves a good backdrop to make the portrait appear even more realistic.

Shelby's portrait is slowly coming to life...in this step I continued to add the neck fur while also narrowing the muzzle. I should have this portrait completed by this week's end if all goes as planned! The ears and the rest of the neck fur should be a breeze to do.

Custom artwork commission completed!

After many weeks, this commission is now pending client approval! I'm so very happy with the design and how it turned out. Final size of this colored pencil drawing is about 13" x 17" with some room for cropping should the artwork be adorned with a smaller mat opening.

Police dog artwork update

I just purchased a large format flatbet scanner and I dont' regret one penny I spent! Although I've reduced the resolution on the images above, one can still see much clearer detail than on my previous posts of the Pentagon Artwork. K-9 Kira is coming along just fine...minus a few gray hairs (at the request of the client).

Watercolor Pet Portrait update

I can now say that the background is pretty much completed, perhaps a few touch ups here and there, and a few more tiny whispy branches.
After all this work, I will now start to paint the details of the poodle!

I've been busy drawing the basic outline sketch for this standard poodle watercolor portrait. I will start to paint very soon!

This portrait is of a dog named Rilee who recently lost her life to cancer. I had finished this painting for a while but held off putting on my website because I didn't want the recipient to see their gift before they received it. So here it is, my first attempt at pastels on black velour paper.
